Aftershave vs Cologne vs Perfume: What's the Difference?
Share
Walk into any fragrance aisle and you’ll see the same words repeated on the boxes: perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne, aftershave. They’re often used as though they mean the same thing, and in everyday speech they sometimes do. But they describe different strengths and, in the case of aftershave, a different purpose altogether.
We’ve put together this guide to clear things up. Below, we explain what each term means, how they compare on strength and staying power, how UK and US usage differ, and how to pick the right one for you.
The short answer: the main difference is concentration, meaning how much fragrance oil is blended into the liquid. Perfume (parfum) is the strongest, followed by eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne. Aftershave is usually the lightest, and it’s designed to be applied to freshly shaved skin as well as to scent it. Higher concentrations generally last longer and cost more.
Fragrance types at a glance
| Type | Typical fragrance concentration | Typical staying power | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perfume (parfum or extrait) | Around 20% or more | Many hours, often a full day | Special occasions, evenings, a luxurious signature scent |
| Eau de parfum (EDP) | Roughly 15–20% | Up to around 8 hours | Everyday wear that lasts, work and evenings |
| Eau de toilette (EDT) | Roughly 5–15% | Around 4–7 hours | Lighter daytime wear, warm weather |
| Eau de cologne (EDC) | Roughly 2–5% | A few hours | A quick refresh, casual wear |
| Aftershave | Usually around 1–3%, sometimes less | Shorter, often a couple of hours | After shaving, a light scent |
A word of caution: these ranges are guides, not hard rules. Brands set their own formulas, the categories overlap, and sources quote slightly different figures. Some eaux de toilette can be as strong as some eaux de parfum, so treat the table as a starting point.
What is perfume?
In everyday conversation, “perfume” often just means any fragrance, and many people use it for women’s scents in particular. In the strict sense, though, perfume (also called parfum or extrait) is the most concentrated type, usually around 20% or more fragrance oil.
Because it has so much oil, perfume tends to last longest, sits closer to the skin and needs less product per application. It is also usually the most expensive form, which is why many people save it for evenings and special occasions.
Eau de parfum vs eau de toilette
These two cover most of the fragrances people buy, so the difference is worth knowing.
Eau de parfum (EDP) contains more fragrance oil, so it usually smells richer, lasts longer and projects more steadily. It’s a good choice when you want a scent that stays with you from morning into evening.
Eau de toilette (EDT) has less oil and more alcohol and water. The name comes from the French “faire sa toilette”, meaning to get ready. It’s lighter, fresher and usually cheaper, which is why many people prefer it for daytime and warmer weather.
The same fragrance is often sold in both strengths, and that gives you a useful comparison. For example, we offer Allure Eau de Parfum and Allure Eau de Toilette as separate listings, and likewise Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Parfum and Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Toilette. The scent theme is recognisably the same, but the EDP is typically fuller and longer lasting, while the EDT is lighter and fresher. If you love a fragrance, trying both strengths is the best way to learn which suits you.
What is cologne?
Cologne has two meanings, and that’s where much of the confusion starts.
The original meaning. Eau de cologne (“water from Cologne”) was created in Cologne, Germany, in 1709 by the Italian perfumer Giovanni Maria Farina. It was a light, citrus-led fragrance, and it was originally intended for everyone rather than for men specifically. In modern perfumery, eau de cologne is a strength category with a low concentration of fragrance oil, typically around 2–5%, built on citrus notes and a lot of alcohol. It’s designed to refresh rather than to last.
The everyday meaning. In the US, “cologne” has become a general word for any men’s fragrance, whatever its strength. In the UK, you’ll more often hear “aftershave” used for men’s fragrance, and “cologne” is used less often, though you’ll still see it on bottles and in product names.
This is why you can’t rely on the name alone. As an example, one of our listings is the Creed Viking Cologne Eau de Parfum. The name says “cologne”, but the concentration listed is eau de parfum. So the golden rule is to check the concentration on the label rather than assuming from a single word.
What is aftershave?
Aftershave is the odd one out because it has a practical job as well as a scent. It’s applied to freshly shaved skin to soothe, cool and sometimes disinfect, and it also leaves a light fragrance behind.
There are a few forms:
- Splash or lotion: usually alcohol-based, with a refreshing, sometimes stinging feel on newly shaved skin and a light scent.
- Balm: alcohol-free or low-alcohol and more moisturising, which often suits dry or sensitive skin. Some balms are only lightly scented, and a few are fragrance-free.
- Gel or fluid: lighter textures that absorb quickly.
A good example is the CHANEL Bleu de Chanel Aftershave Lotion, which is described as a lotion that soothes razor burn, energising and bracing, and leaves skin delicately scented. It carries the same aromatic-woody character as the fragrance but is designed for skincare as well as scent.
Can aftershave be used as a fragrance? It can, but because its fragrance concentration is low, it will fade sooner than an eau de toilette or eau de parfum. Many people use aftershave after shaving and a stronger fragrance afterwards. If you have sensitive skin, an alcohol-based splash may sting, so a balm can be a gentler choice.
Cologne vs aftershave: the key differences
- Purpose: cologne is purely a fragrance, while aftershave also treats and soothes skin.
- Strength: eau de cologne is usually a little stronger than aftershave, though the gap isn’t always large.
- Skin feel: aftershave often contains soothing or moisturising ingredients, while cologne is mainly alcohol and fragrance.
- Where you apply it: aftershave goes on the shaved area. Cologne goes on pulse points such as the neck and wrists, and on clothes if you like.
- Naming: in the UK, “aftershave” is often used loosely for men’s fragrance, so read the label to see whether it’s a true skin product.
Are these categories for men or women?
Not strictly. Concentration describes strength and says nothing about who it’s for. You’ll find men’s fragrances in eau de parfum and parfum strength, and women’s fragrances in eau de toilette and cologne strength. Marketing labels (“pour homme”, “pour femme”) suggest a style, but plenty of people wear whichever scent they enjoy. Choose by how a fragrance smells and performs on you, not by the gender on the box.
How to choose the right type
- For everyday wear and longevity: choose an eau de parfum, which suits work days that turn into evenings.
- For warm weather or a lighter touch: choose an eau de toilette or eau de cologne.
- For special occasions: consider a perfume or parfum, which offers depth and the longest wear.
- For post-shave care: pick an aftershave balm or lotion that suits your skin type, and layer a fragrance afterwards if you like.
- On a budget: an EDT usually gives you a good balance of price and performance, and you can use more of it.
You can also match your fragrance strength to the season. Lighter styles feel refreshing in summer, while richer, longer-lasting ones suit autumn and winter.
Making any fragrance last longer
- Moisturise first. Fragrance clings better to hydrated skin.
- Apply to pulse points. The neck, chest and wrists are warm, which helps the scent develop.
- Don’t rub your wrists together. It can break down the top notes.
- Spray a little on clothes as well, where scent often lasts longer, but check the fabric first.
- Store it well. Keep bottles away from sunlight, heat and humidity.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between aftershave, cologne and perfume?
The main difference is how much fragrance oil each contains. Perfume has the most, cologne has less and aftershave usually has the least. Aftershave is also designed to soothe skin after shaving.
Is eau de toilette the same as cologne?
Not quite. Eau de toilette generally has a higher concentration than eau de cologne, so it usually lasts longer, although the terms overlap and brands vary.
Which lasts longest: EDP, EDT or aftershave?
Eau de parfum typically lasts longest of the three, then eau de toilette, then aftershave. Actual wear time also depends on skin type, weather and the fragrance itself.
Can women wear cologne and men wear perfume?
Yes. Original eau de cologne was created for everyone, and gender labels are mainly marketing. Wear whatever you enjoy.
Can I use aftershave as a fragrance?
You can, but it usually has a lower concentration, so the scent won’t last as long. Many people use aftershave for skin care and add a fragrance on top.
Which is better for sensitive skin?
An alcohol-free aftershave balm is often gentler than a splash. If your skin reacts easily, patch-test any new product first.
Does a higher concentration mean a better fragrance?
Not necessarily. It means a stronger, longer-lasting one. A light eau de toilette can be perfect for a hot day or an office, so “better” depends on how and when you wear it.
